The Bell Jar

By Sylvia Plath

I must start saying that I've been wanting to read this book for a while. I have read good comments about it and it was on my all-time book list since about 3 years. I finally borrowed it from the library and started with my reading around 4 weeks ago.

The book is really good, the narrative started intriguing and the character was by moments both deep and shallowly smart. I, however, have been slowly affected by it. Having reached about the middle part of the book, I had to stop reading for a while. The slow but steady loss of her mind, has caught me unguarded. I was at that moment dealing with sentiments of lack of motivation and sadness, and reading this extremely well described process of dealing with/giving up to insanity, really affected my own mood. Although I do not relate to the main character, her flaws or strengths, I could just very easily relate with her struggles and that helped with relating as well to her incipient depression. I don't wanna spoil anyone, so I won't tell anything more about the story.

The book draws you from the start, so I highly recommend it. Just a small advice, do not read it when your mood is grey.
